August 6 – Today I arrived at the news station at 9am. I looked over the news casts a bit, wrote some stuff, and then headed to the morning meeting. There was a big story in the works with a high school teacher at Paso High who had sex with a 16 year-old student. His trial was the day before and he plead not guilty. KSBY wanted to run a story on the trial today but needed a fresh new angle. They planned to send Connie to Paso to try and confront him and she asked me to go with her. We found his address on White Pages and headed up to Paso Robles.
Our plan was to literally knock on his door and see if he would tell us anything, literally anything, about his story. Even if he slammed the door in our faces, it would still make pretty good video. We drove all the way out there and pulled up to his house only to find he had a big property with a long driveway and a big locked gate keeping us from going anywhere near his front door. There was no intercom or anything, we were out of luck. We sat outside his place a little trying to decide what to do. We called the news room and they suggested with leave a business card and a note telling him where he could contact us. We did this and then headed to the High School’s District Office to see if we could talk to anyone there. We also fired off an email to Mr. Monn’s lawyer to see if he had anything to say.
The district office was pretty unhelpful. They sent us on a goose chase to find their media person, a man named Ashley, only to find out he had already left for the day. It wasn’t even noon. Sounds like a nice job. Then they gave us a statement saying Mr. Monn was fired from the High School and sent us on our way home.
So the story was pretty unsuccessful and with no soundbites or quotes we had to turn it into a VO. But when we got back to the newsroom Connie had gotten a reply from Jeremy Monn’s lawyer it said something along the lines of, ‘as long as you’re stalking around outside my client’s house, I have nothing to say to you…’ it turns out Mr. Monn had seen us in a big News truck outside his house and called his lawyer. Awkward. I took off shortly after that around 3pm.

August 8 – Today I came in at 9 with plans to stay in the studio and help produce. After the meeting I went on VOD and helped Mike pick with NBC stories to run for the 5 o’clock news show. Then I spent the rest of the morning rewriting those stories or cutting them down from packages into VOs. I wrote a story about Lone Star Ticks:
IN TONIGHT’S HEALTHY LIVING…
THE LONE STAR TICK HAS RECENTLY BEEN MAKING IT’S WAY ACROSS THE UNITED STATES… ALONG WITH AN INCREASE IN MEAT ALLERGIES.
THE TICK IS USUALLY FOUND IN THE SOUTHEASTERN PART OF THE U-S.
DOCTORS HAVE NOTICED MANY OF THEIR PATIENTS WHO HAVE BEEN BIT… SUDDENLY DEVELOPING MEAT ALLERGIES.
THE LONE STAR TICK AND RED MEAT SHARE A COMMON SUGAR THAT IS NOT FOUND IN HUMANS.
IT’S FINE WHEN PEOPLE EAT IT… BUT WHEN IT’S INTRODUCED TO THE BODY AS A TICK BITE… IT TRIGGERS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM.
THE ONLY WAY TO STOP SYMPTOMS… IS TO AVOID RED MEAT.
I wrote a story about parents texting and driving:
PARENTS MAY WARN THEIR KIDS TO STAY OFF THE PHONE WHILE DRIVING… BUT A NEW STUDY SHOWS THEY MAY BE PART OF THE PROBLEM.
MORE THAN HALF OF 400 TEENS SURVEYED SAID THEY TALKED ON CELL PHONES WITH THEIR MOM OR DAD WHILE DRIVING.
MANY SAID THEIR PARENTS GET ANGRY WHEN THEY DON’T ANSWER THE PHONE… EVEN IF THEY ARE BEHIND THE WHEEL.
THE YOUNG DRIVERS ALSO SAID THEIR OWN PARENTS USE CELL PHONES WHILE DRIVING.
And most of the C block. Then I did a few bumps and unfortunately had to take off for the day around 1 because I had work. I think I am getting much better and faster at writing, which Doug, the news director, has told me is a great skill to have as a future producer.
